Necessary Tools and Platforms for Successful Trading and Investing

Do you need only premium terminals to earn money in the market? Not really. From my personal journey, I can assure you there are enough free sources that can be used to be profitable in the market. In initial years, I used to spend only 1000-1100 Rs/Month on Sensibull as a premium subscription. Later, that also became free. For investments, you may not need any premium subscription at all. These platforms are based on my personal experience and are ones I use very frequently.

Tools for Trading:-

https://in.tradingview.com/ - This is one of the most popular charting platforms among traders. These days, all brokers in India provide this charting platform in their trading terminals. All the technical analysis tools and indicators are available in TradingView. Many proprietary trading desks also use this platform as it allows them to code their strategies and indicators into the platform and create algos. As a retail trader, you may not need all of its premium features; the charting platform and its existing tools in the free subscription are enough for any trader to analyze the market. I became profitable in the market with its free terminal only. I never needed the premium version. As it is cloud-based, all your layouts and drawings on the chart are stored automatically.

https://sensibull.com/ -This is an option trading platform. It provides many valuable features like the OI change chart, Multi-strike OI, FII DII data chart, IV and IVP data, strategy builder, screeners, etc. Personally, I have been using this for the last four years. It significantly changed my trading style. Although Opstra and Quantsapp are also excellent platforms for option analysis, I prefer Sensibull from a UI and economical perspective. The draft portfolio feature in Sensibull can be used for paper trading.

https://www.nseindia.com/option-chain :- Although the above option platforms show the OI data in charts, checking the raw option data always gives an edge to your market analysis.

Tools for positional trading/ long term Investing:-

https://www.screener.in/ :-You can analyse any company’s business moat, EPS growth, sales and PE growth charts, and what not! Everything needed for an investor to analyze the market is available on this platform, completely free. I use this platform to screen undervalued, high-growth businesses by running queries in screeners. It also provides links to download all annual reports, con-calls, and credit rating reports.

https://www.fpi.nsdl.co.in- This is very helpful in analysing the sector trends where foreign institutional investors are putting their money. It is one of the best platforms for investor due diligence. I use this platform to check fortnightly sector-wise data. Foreign investors are always considered to be smart money. Best used for Positional Trading/investing.

https://trendlyne.com- This platform can be used to refer to and download any research report provided by any brokerage house for free. As an investor, it is crucial to read these brokerage house research reports to gain insights into the industry, company management, and understanding of moats.

Annual Reports/Investor Relations Documents - (Download from company website or screener)It’s always wise to read the annual report of the company where you are investing. Important things you can understand from the report include the management’s outlook on company growth, the ethics of company governance, and any potential red flags.

Additionally, I sometimes use Streak (for backtesting trading strategies), StockEdge, Opstra, Quantsapp, Nifty PE-ratio, BSE India, EMIS, Economic Times (for tracking experts’ comments and views on macros), and Moneycontrol (occasionally to check global markets).

Free Resources to Help You in Your Investment and Trading Journey

The most common questions I get asked are: “Where do I start?” “How do I do it?” “Where can I learn?”

When you are just starting, it’s not wise to spend a lot of money on random courses. Everyone wants to earn some extra income for financial independence, and there is nothing wrong with that. You have to start before it’s too late. But first, you need to know which Investment/trading style suits you: day trading, swing trading, positional trading, or buy-and-forget (pure long-term value investing).

It’s never easy to arrive at this decision, and it takes some time in the market to understand what suits you. However, I always recommend that anyone who is into trading/investing should try to have a core and satellite approach. This means that 60-70% of your portfolio should be allocated for pure investment purposes, while 30-40% can be used for speculative purposes. Simply put, you can use your satellite portfolio amount for short-term or positional trading. Your core investment portfolio of 60-70% should be properly diversified into different market caps, different sectors, and also asset classes.

Here are a few resources that can help you in your investment journey. Please take note.
